A hurricane hits and first responders scramble to share maps to dispatch units and coordinate response across agencies.  Personnel on the ground provide real-time location reports of electrical outages, damage assessments and road closings.  New law enforcement resources unfamiliar with the area come from federal and state agencies to assist in the response, guided by detailed maps of alternate roads and population areas. Transportation professionals update evacuation routes for the public maps and work to identify areas suitable for helicopter landings.  Meanwhile the public monitors the constantly changing situation for advisory notices for their neighborhood.

Lately, my team has been getting a lot of calls from both drone service companies and end users alike.  In fact, in a recent example, I had a company specializing in creating some of the best and smallest LIDAR sensors available call me up looking for a solution.  Unlike some, they are a relatively sophisticated user of airborne sensors and platforms.  Their issue was creating and delivering a valuable final product to the customer, a market leading railroad.

Drones kind of took me by surprise.  Let me clarify.  For those of us who primarily serve the geospatial industry, the eventual proliferation of drones was inevitable.  We all saw it coming.  We all had a pretty good idea of its potential for mass disruption.  Software companies, like TerraGo, already had solutions supporting airborne platforms, so supporting the business of drones should be no big deal, right?
