One of the latest new features available to apps built using TerraGo Magic, including our own TerraGo Edge, is the GPS offset mapping enabled by integrating laser rangefinders with Android or iOS apps. With offsets, you can shoot anything in your line of sight to remotely capture its coordinates without having to physically occupy its position.

There are a whole bunch of reasons why it doesn’t stink in just about every industry. There are features that are physically impossible to reach due to terrain, maybe across a river or a canyon….a radar tower behind a security fence…a bird’s nest or habitat that can’t be reached or disturbed…. a water pipeline spanning wetlands….anyway, you get it. Tough or impossible to get to, but they all need to be mapped. In all cases, adding this new feature to your app improves data coverage and SAFETY.

Dave, don’t scale that 50 foot border fence…

Duuude, do you really think it’s a good idea to stand at the entrance to the Grizzly cave until you get sub-meter accuracy…???

You get it.

For less adventurous workers or mapping assets without blood-stained teeth or skull-crushing paws, what can this feature promise me? Love, that’s what. No not love. TIME. And Money of course.

In a field study using Laser Technology’s TruPulse 360, 21 features in a city park (street lights, water utilities, trees) were mapped in 1 minute 30 seconds. The time to walk to each item – 12 minutes…. and that’s without waiting for any required GPS accuracy. That’s gotta be like 90% savings. Multiply that by the thousands of assets or features you have to map. And the hours you spend doing it. No seriously, multiply it. I’ll wait……. Pretty big number, huh?

So if you care about safety, time, money (and maybe love), check out the new offset feature in TerraGo Edge or a TerraGo Magic-built app near you. And leave the bears alone.
