Louisiana's Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is responsible for managing the state's massive flood protection infrastructure. The DOTD's Public Works and Water Resources Division manages the inspection program for all levees, dams and reservoirs. The challenges with levees alone are particularly daunting. There are over 1,100 miles of levees that must be inspected four times, each and every year. Flood risk and levee conditions are dynamic in nature, as banks erode, animals burrow, closures rust, valves wear out and pumps need repaired. So the field technology needs to be reliable and efficient to help turn inspection reports into preventive maintenance as quickly as possible. In 2015, the inspection system was a custom-built application developed by an engineering services firm. The system utilized Trimble YUMA ruggedized tablets. that would sync to a central database for reporting. Over time, the system became less and less reliable, and required a lot of troubleshooting, largely due to database synchronization failures. To truly fix the system would have meant more expensive custom development services. And that wasn't the only expensive element of the system. Each of the six Trimble YUMA hardware units, fully configured, ran around $6,000 and the annual software maintenance was around $18,000, which only provided upgrades and bug fixes. It did nothing to help solve the database issues.
Like thousands of water utilities across the United States, the City of Sebring (FL) Utilities Department is tasked with providing a safe and reliable water supply, while managing all the dispersed assets of the water distribution and wastewater systems. And like every water utility, Sebring needs to regularly locate, map and inspect these assets to maintain service levels and operations. Typically, this means an expensive Geographic Information System (GIS) and the use of outside surveyors utilizing specialized GPS equipment. When Sebring evaluated this approach, they received a quote for GIS software that was over $30,000 and bids for surveying services that were as high as $300,000. And that didn’t even include the mobile tools to collect the data or integration with their existing CAD system.

Seattle City Light understood that it could transform field operations if it could provide open access to the distribution system data housed in its CAD database. Ideally, Seattle City Light wanted all personnel and field crews to be able to access and query data in the field, at any work site. The solution would need to work for personnel with no CAD expertise, specialized software or proprietary hardware. It would need to be available from any location, even offline when the user was unable to access any network. Seattle City Light evaluated available technologies and selected TerraGo's GeoPDF(r) to achieve this vision.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), which resides within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), is tasked with helping private landowners maintain healthy and productive lands.
