GeoPDF Maps Accelerate Japan Disaster Damage Assessment

On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami, leaving 15,000 people dead and nearly 8,000 people missing. Hitachi Solutions, the TerraGo distributor in Japan and East Asia and a joint development partner, as part of its effort to assist in the reconstruction following the earthquake and tsunami, utilized TerraGo GeoPDF pre- and post-March 11 maps and imagery to dramatically simplify residential damage assessment and the clerical work of issuing disaster damage certificates.

TerraGo CEO Rick Cobb's interview in the Oct. 2011 GEOINT issue of Geospatial Intelligence Forum article "Visionary Response" explores how the company is extending geospatial information to the field and improving workflow.
"Our goal is to apply geospatial and GIS to common information technology including Adobe, Microsoft, the web and Google. We bring those worlds together for those who don't want complexity," said Cobb.

GeoEye Sr. VP of Marketing Tony Frazier and TerraGo CEO Rick Cobb were recently interviewed by GIS Cafe Editor Susan Smith for her column.
Said Frazier, “We noted that many users in the community need to be able to take that content on the go and also collaborate through lightweight mobile tools.
TerraGo is really a market leader in that space. We licensed technology from TerraGo to enable users to download our imagery in a GeoPDF format.”

Nearly 90,000 high resolution scans of the more than 200,000 historical USGS topographic maps, some dating as far back as 1884, are now available online. The Historical Topographic Map Collection includes published U.S. maps of all scales and editions, and are offered as a georeferenced digital download or as a scanned print from the USGS Store.
