The Challenge

The Challenge

Henderson manages freight operations that move very large shipments of highly-specialized agricultural products from Europe and South America via ship and deliver them to customer destinations all over the United States via rail and truck, with requisite stops for customs, cargo holds and warehousing. At Henderson, every load needs to be delivered on-time and on-budget period. This means coordinating with suppliers, office supervisors, terminal personnel, warehouse workers and drivers. It means knowing where the people and the products are at all times.

“We didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars on GPS handhelds to be able to locate our field assets, cargo and people.” - James Henderson, President of Henderson Logistics

The Solution

To get more efficient and lower the cost of operations, Henderson needed visibility into the location of crews and cargo. They needed to get past the manual processes, cumbersome approval procedures, paper forms and spreadsheets that were the backbone of the company for decades. They evaluated a combination of GPS handhelds, logistics software packages and navigation systems, but the systems didn’t talk to each other and were far too expensive in a business that needed to get leaner on the job, not invest more capital in back-office systems and training . The solution they found was TerraGo Edge.

"We certainly didn’t want to retrain our entire operations on new systems." - James Henderson, President of Henderson Logistics

The Results

With TerraGo Edge, Henderson was to deploy electronic forms on existing iPhones and android for the vast majority staff along with inexpensive iPads for some operations and personnel. The simplicity of the app meant little to no training on specialized software. With the onboard GPS capabilities and the location tracking feature of TerraGo Edge, Henderson was able to gain a bird’s eye view of their entire operation, something that seemed impossible not long ago. Where are the containers for today’s Maersk booking? Do I have a crane and forklift operator on-site? What is the status of the Customs hold service contract 6348? Do we have a signed bill of lading and dock receipt? Have we reached a full load for Peru shipment? Did we deliver 10 tons of yeast to Cargill by 4PM for on-time delivery with no penalties?

“With TerraGo Edge, we get GPS-tagged forms that make our entire operations run more smoothly on the devices we all carry anyway.” - James Henderson, President of Henderson Logistics
