How do I try TerraGo Edge?

Download the mobile app from the Appstore for iOS or Google play for Android to create location-based notes and tasks, and view you notes on free online maps. To experience the full power of Edge including collaborating with other team members, building custom forms, creating offline maps and syncing across the enterprise, contact us for TerraGo Edge Pilot Evaluation here.

What is an Edge Notebook?

A notebook is the highest level of organization for TerraGo Edge. It is a file container that includes your map, notes, forms, images and videos for your project. These notebooks are automatically synced to TerraGo Edge Server and can also be shared directly with peers via email, DropBox, AirDrop or Beam.

Why can’t I see any notebooks on my dashboard? (on a mobile device)

On your mobile device, notebooks aren’t synced until you download them from the server for the first time. (Since mobile devices have less memory, you may not want every notebook that is on the server). Tap “View All” under notebooks in the dashboard, and then simply tap on the notebook you’d like to download. Once it is ready, the download icon will disappear and your notebook will be ready to use and appear on your dashboard.

How do I import my own maps to TerraGo Edge (GeoPDF, GeoTIFF)?

From the main top navigation on TerraGo Edge Server, go to the Maps screen. Press the New Map button at the top right, name the map and then press the Import link.

After selecting your file, use the crop button to select the desired map region, and press save.

How do I import a GeoPDF directly into TerraGo Edge mobile for iOS or Android?

  • “Open in” Edge - either open a GeoPDF document that currently exists on your mobile device (such as in your email) directly in Edge or use a link to download the GeoPDF to your mobile device and then open the GeoPDF directly in Edge.
  • The TerraGo Edge mobile app will open automatically and you will receive an Edge alert which will let you know that a new Edge Notebook will be automatically created, your GeoPDF will be imported and you will be notified when this process is complete. You will also have the option to continue on with or cancel this process at this point.
  • If TerraGo Edge mobile is closed or in the background on your mobile device, you will receive a standard iOS or Android notification letting you know that your Edge Notebook with your map has been created. Your new Notebook and map will named the same as the filename of your original GeoPDF.
  • If you tap on the iOS or Android notification, TerraGo Edge mobile app will open automatically, or If TerraGo Edge mobile was already open and in the foreground on your mobile device, you will then receive an Edge alert which letting you know that your new Edge Notebook and map are almost done processing. You will receive an alert when this process is complete.
  • Finally, you will receive another Edge alert letting you know that the process is complete and your new Edge Notebook and map are now ready for your to use. You will have the option to go directly to viewing the map in your new Notebook or just dismiss the alert to continue what you were doing.

How long does it take to create an offline map?

Map generation time depends on the number of zoom levels you include, as well as the overall area. A small map could take one minute while a large map with 6 zoom levels could take 15 minutes.

How do I create an offline map on iPad or iPhone?

Offline map creation is currently only available on TerraGo Edge Server, but will be available on iPad in a future release. However, you can still download and use offline maps created from TerraGo Edge Server.

How do I create my own forms through TerraGo Edge?

On TerraGo Edge Server, click the Forms button in the top navigation. Name the form, then drag your field types from the right column into the left column preview area.

To edit a field’s properties, simply click on the field in the preview area and the properties will appear on the right (mandatory, data type, select values, etc). These forms will be available as attachments when you create notes in the future.

How do I create a form on iPad or iPhone through TerraGo Edge?

Form creation is currently only available on TerraGo Edge Server, but will be available on iPad in a future release. However, you can still download and use forms created from TerraGo Edge Server, or use an existing form template available on the TerraGo Edge Free App.

Why can’t I use the map or form that I just created when I create a note in TerraGo Edge?

To use an offline map or form within a notebook, you must attach them to the notebook either at time of notebook creation or by editing the notebook afterwards. You can attach maps and forms to Notebooks through the TerraGo Edge Server dashboard by selecting the edit Notebook icon.

How do I use an offline map in TerraGo Edge?

While in map view, tap the name of your current map on the top left of the map screen and a pop-out will appear that will let you select the map you’d like to use. Both your online and offline maps (once attached to a Notebook) will appear here.

How can I minimize the steps for a TerraGo Edge App user to collect data for a routine workflow?

By enabling the QuickNote! feature when setting up a notebook, which can be customized per notebook definition. With QuickNote! enabled a field user who has downloaded this notebook to their mobile device, will be presented with the QuickNote option whenever they create a new note which will:

1. default the geometry type to a point

2. default the location method to current GPS location

3. default the form template customized per notebook definition and immediately take the user directly into that form for completion

4. default the note name customized per notebook definition, before automatically saving.

This process can be quickly repeated over and over again to save time and money during field data collection.

How can I use my Esri account to see basemaps?

In the main header navigation on the web, click on the settings (gear) icon, then integrations. Sign in with your Esri username and password under your Edge user account. Once signed in, your mobile client will have access to your basemaps. Just go to map view, then tap the select map button at the top left, and you should see them in your list. You must be signed in with the same user account on mobile that you connected through the Edge Server integrations page.

How can I use WMS imagery as overlays to my maps?

On the web, go into maps, then click new. At the top left, change the tab from maps to overlays. From this screen, enter your WMS URL and press Go. You can then select and name your layer. To make this overlay available to your mobile clients, you must also attach it to a notebook like you would a map. Finally, to view the overlay, simply open your notebook in map mode on your mobile client, and use the Select Overlay button at the top left of the screen to view them. You can turn overlays on or off, and drag them in the order you'd like them displayed.

Are old versions of Edge Server compatible with newer versions of the iOS client?

Generally, no. Your mobile client app can continue to collect data, but it won't be able to sync back to the server until you update it to the newest version. As a best practice, it is recommended to update both Edge Server and the mobile clients at the same time before a project begins.

Do you support importing multiple layers from GeoPDF's?

Currently, you can select multiple layers from your PDF to import, but they will all be merged down to a single basemap. If you would like to view multiple layers on a map it is recommended to do so with Shapefiles, KML, WMS, or the Rest API.

How can I get my data out of Edge?

You can easily export using Shapefile, KML, CSV, PDF, and Geodatabase format. Additionally, you can use the Web Feature Service (WFS) server to access your data with a WFS client, or integrate with our Rest API for real-time data transfer.

What is the difference between tags and note layers?

Tags provide a simple way to organize and search for your data. You can add multiple tags per note. Note layers are a way to add one parent level to your notes within a notebook. Notes can only be associated with one note layer and you can search by note layer names. One additional advantage of note layers is that you can filter by them in list and map modes, unlike tags.

How do I pair a 3rd party GPS receiver with an Android device?

  • Here are the instructions:
    • Pair GPS device - in Settings/Bluetooth, select desired GPS device and follow on-screen instructions.
    • Open TerraGo Edge app, open the settings menu, select system settings > location configuration. You will see location provider sources available to toggle on or off. Select desired source for GPS location and toggle it on and toggle everything else off.
    • Now any location data you collect will be pulled directly from the location of your GPS receiver.

Does Edge use a lot of cellular data?

We've taken several precautions to try to prevent excessive cellular usage.

  • First, TerraGo Edge only syncs notes that have been updated, never old unchanged information. Photos, videos, and offline maps are only synced the first time. Photos taken in Edge are compressed to JPG from the raw PNG file, bringing a typical file size down from 12-13mb to 2mb or so.
  • For those using online maps (openstreet maps, mapquest, etc), we use Mapbox to cache the tiles for a short amount of time to help prevent re-downloading redundant tiles. The most recent 1000 tiles viewed will remain in your offline cache.
  • For those that want zero data usage, a notebook could be loaded up ahead of time with an offline map, and all data could be collected in the field in airplane mode. You would then sync the data back to the server later when you have wi-fi access at your office/hotel/etc.

Which versions of the apps can view high accuracy data?

Edge currently captures the exact coordinates from your 3rd party GPS device, but in some operating systems it cannot display the exact accuracy level because the OS location services obscure it. Here are the details based on hardware:

  • Android: Any NMEA device paired with Edge will show full accuracy and all metadata available.
  • iOS: All GPS manufacturer’s we’ve partnered with (SXBlue, EOS, CHC, etc) will pass the exact coordinates and all metadata. Please see full list here.
  • Additionally, any GPS receiver capable of communicating via bluetooth with iOS will be able to pass on exact coordinates, but will visually report in increments of 5 meters because of a limitation of iOS Core Location.

What types of projections are supported for importing data?

Files must be in WGS84 Web Mercator.

Why aren’t my GeoPDF or GeoTIFF maps displaying on the map correctly?

Map projections need to be in WGS 84 to display properly inside the TerraGo Edge Application.

Sharing files between the Free Mobile App and a Licensed Mobile App (Same capabilities on iOS and Android):

Edge App Import Capabilities:

  • .edge files - includes licenses, notebooks, notes, .mbtile maps and forms
  • .pdf files -includes GeoPDF and Geospatial PDF map conversion and import

Sharing .pdf and .edge Files Between Free and Paid Edge Apps:

  • Free to free - sharing always available
  • Free to licensed - sharing always available
  • Licensed to licensed - sharing available to anyone with an app connected to the same Edge Server
  • Licensed to licensed - sharing not available between apps connected to different licensed servers
  • Licensed to free - sharing not available from a licensed app to a free app

Best practices:

  • Sharing a full Notebook as .edge will include all forms, maps, notes, etc.
  • Sharing an individual Note or Notes as .edge will only include the specific note(s) selected and will not include other forms, maps, or notes inside the Notebook
  • Map size and number of map layers will affect the time it takes to convert and import the file. When importing larger maps and maps with multiple layers, you will be sent a notification once the file has been successfully imported.
